On Saturday, we hosted our first Youth Work n Learn with the Water Wise Youth Committee! πŸ’š We had a great time installing two rain gardens at the stormwater lot in Bunny Friend Park. This was phase 1 of the project. The youth and their guardians shaped the rain gardens and planted them with native plants (including irises thank you @gnoirissociety for the donation πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ). And some of the youth presented about the native plants- including Calcea on the last slide presenting about irises. Way to go y’all! πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘
For the Youth! Join us on Saturday from 8am-11am for a rain garden work β€˜n learn! 🌱 πŸ’›
This why we do what we do! This photo was captured by Todd Reynolds, Executive Director of @groundworknola, after the June 10th flood event. This green infrastructure intervention captures and manages stormwater where it falls. At this project site, stormwater from North Claiborne Avenue is diverted into the pictured bioswale. Before this project was installed, the stormwater would continue going to the drainage system where it needs to be pumped into Lake Pontchartrain. Our pumping system, when the pumps are turned on and fully working and not experiencing broken pipes and clogged storm drains, has a capacity to pump an inch of rainwater for the first hour and half an inch each hour after that. Some folks received 7” of rain in a short time on June 10th! This project at N Claiborne and St Bernard Avenue manages 35,000 gallons of stormwater πŸ‘€
We had another great Culture of Cleanliness Event at Bunny Friend Park. We cleared catch basins βœ… and the trash we collected was used to make art to bring awareness of all the trash that ends up in our catch basins and drainage system. All of which eventually ends up in Lake Pontchartrain (on the Eastbank). Thanks to everyone who came out to make this event a success! @groundworknola @prevostkatherine @ebsculture @sageville_neworleans @ariboyd_ @hcsnola @cheryl.austin.710 @posigen_solar_solutions
Here’s a quick πŸ‘€ to see what we have coming up!
Getting in some flooding reports from residents today across New Orleans. What are your thoughts?? #infrastructure #nolaflood #nola
